Hi Joanne,

My name is Brian Lindshield, I am an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Human Nutrition at K-State. I was putting together some
materials on vitamins and I ran into some history that caught my
attention. E.V. McCollum is credited with discovering vitamins A & D and
was a real pioneer in discovering that vitamins even exist. What caught
my attention was that his 1964 autobiography was titled "From Kansas
Farm Boy to Scientist."

In the 1st chapter he says:

"In 1863 Father had taken a "claim" or homestead of 160 acres ten miles
west and one mile north of Fort Scott...The surveyor's description of it
was: S.E. 1/4 of Section #17, Township 25, Range 23, East."

In chapter 3 talks about going to a schoolhouse in Redfield. I just
picked this up, so I have just put in what I have picked up by looking
at pages. I thought this was some interesting history that I am not sure
anyone in your county is aware of. I tried briefly to track down the
exact location on the internet but was unsuccessful (so I'm not sure
that this is in Bourbon County), but I thought you would probably know
someone who would.

This is more corny than "cool", but most mnemonic devices are. I read this in a nutrition book and it helped me to remember the B Vitamins.
Tender (thiamin)
Romance (riboflavin)
Never (niacin)
Fails, (folate)
with 6 or 12 (B6 and B12)
Beautiful (biotin)
Pearls. (pantothenic acid)

I know someone that has a book called Eat Right For Your Type by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo. The book is about eating certain foods that are supposed to be ideal for whatever blood type you have. Is there any truth to this?

I was watching the Today show the other morning and a guest they had on the show was talking about ways to speed up your metabolism. She said that it is good to get Vitamin C to help with fat burn because Vitamin C blocks cortisol prodution. Is this true?
